" " A Branch UQtise. We some weeks ago made mention of the fact that Capt. R. M. Mclntirc, o this city, was about to open, in the flourishing town of Durham, ar branch dry goods store, he- having secured an eligible location, in a handsome new brick building just erected there. ..The busi ness is-to be under the charge of Mr W. H. Muse, who has been with Captt Mclntire for years past, and is thoroughly versed in the business. Mr. Muse, who has been admitted to a partnership in the new house, the firm being R, M. Mc lntire & Co., left this morning for Durham, and Capt. Mclntire will follow in a few days, to return here as soon as the new business has been fairly opened. Encke's Comet; Enckc's comet, which his been visible for several weeks, may now bo seen through a good telescope in the constel lation of Leo Minor in the eastern hea vens, some ten or filteen degrees above the horizon, at about 2 o'clock in the morning. Prof. Monro B. Snyder, of the city of Philadelphia, says that this comet, though small and invisible to the naked eye, is one of the most interesting of the heavenly bodies, because of its short and constantly decreasing period icity, which, while it was 1,212 6-10 days in the latter part of the last century, is now only 1,210 3yo Tlxo - oomot ia globular in form and has no tail. Its or bit has been studied more" closely than those of many of the planets. The dim inution of the periods, at first ascribed to ethereal resistance, is by modern science considered unexplained. At its perihelion the comet is thirty-two mil' lion and at its aphelion four hundred million miles from the sun. The Stat3 Fair. - The Fair at Raleigh opened on Tues day in good style. On Wednesday the attendance was very large, estimated by the " Visitor at 10,000 persons. The News and Observer publishes a long ac count of the doings on that day. The exhibit seems to be a very large one. We clip a few paragraphs from the News and Observer : A number of ex-Confederate soldier8 met to-day at headquarters in the grand stand. After some appropriate remarks by Gen. Cox and Col. Beasley, it was re solved that a special meeting should be held to-day at 1 p. m. " Capt. Bogardus and son's wonderful skill in shooting glass balls with rifle and shot gun attracted much attention Eu gene Bsgardus rifle 'shooting, with his gun in straight position, was wonderful, as was also his shooting at moving ob jects, such as 14 baUa but' of 15 thrown in the air. , Henry, aged. 6, years, shot glass balls with a rifle, and a glass ball from his' father's fingers with a rifle. Capt Borgardus ; fancy trap shooting delighted the sportsmen. . Capt. Bogar- dus shot Parker gun. niing Dittmuu powder. He has two breech-loading bird guns for sale. " - One of the features of the day was the match betweenihe AshevHle and Raleigh teams, of five men each. Mr. J. W. Scott, of Ridgeway, acted as referee; Messrs. C. J. Voorhees and Hugh Mor son, as judges, and Messrs. Hal. M. Worth and Mr..Yandiver, of Asheville, as scorers. These gentlemen acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of all. Mc Alpine. - This Presbytery is the smallest in the synod of North Carolina. It has 15 ministers, 115elde, 73 deacons, 33 churches and about 2,000 communicants I here was present a fair representaticn from the churchef ; 14 ministers and 22 elders, 36 delegates in all. . The narrative on the state of religion within the boonds of the Presby tery gave, some pleaitng indications of progress. A number of the churches have had ac cessions, while one or two have had a decided increase. . The duty of gif ing to the various objects of benevolence is be coming more general. All the churches, except six, are supplied with stated preaching; the congregations are good and increasing; Sabbath schools are gen erally sustained. It was recommended by resolution that ministers and elders use their utmost efforts to place the A. (7, Presbyterian in every family within their respective congregations. A good religious paper is regarded by the Presbytery a great power in extending the cause of Christ. Rev. Mr. Garriss was dismissed to Bethel Presbytery, S. C. Messrs. Colin Shaw and R. B. Mc Al pine were elected trustees of Davidson College. ' Committee on Foreign Missions re ported that collections had been taken up in most of the churches for this sub ject. The committee on Home Missions reported, recommending the speedy ap" pointment of an evangelist for the Pres bytery. A committee consisting of Messrs. McMillan, Black and Dr. Wil son, were appointed to secure a suitable man and provide the means for his sup port. The Synod of North Carolina was me morialized by the Presbytery to extend its line along the W. & . Wu Railroad to Weldon, taking in that part of Orange Presbytery lying east of the railroad (in eluding the churches along the line) and north of the N. C. Midland; provided Orange Presbytery censent to the Same. Burgaw was chosen as the next place of thee ting, on Thursday before the 4th Sunday of March, 1882, Members of the Presbytery enjoyed very greatly the hos pitality of the people in and around Faison. A bountiful dinner was rpread each day under the tree?, near the church, for the delegates and large con gregations in attendance. Presbytery adjourned late Saturday evening, after a profitable and interesting session. We are indebted for the above to the Goldsboro Messenger, To Builders and others Go to Jaco- bi's for Sash, Blind3 and Doors, Glass, &c. You can get all sizes and at the lowest prices.
